Microcement Showers & Wet Rooms: Is It Waterproof?

How sealed microcement, tanked substrates and Micronoslip combine for grout-free, slip-resistant Irish showers and wet rooms.

Sealed microcement is water-resistant and completely grout-free, which is why it works so well in showers and wet rooms — but the honest technical answer is that the waterproofing job belongs to the substrate beneath it. Build the shower on a properly tanked, waterproofed base, then finish it in microcement, and you get a seamless, spa-like enclosure with no grout lines to discolour and nothing to scrub.

What "waterproof" actually means here

Two separate layers do two separate jobs. The tanking system — a liquid membrane or board build-up applied to the walls and tray area before any finish — is the waterproof barrier that protects the structure behind. The microcement, sealed with a two-part polyurethane, is the water-resistant visible surface that sheds water, resists staining and never opens up at a joint because it has no joints.

Tiled showers work the same way; the difference is what happens over time. A tiled enclosure relies on dozens of metres of grout and silicone to stay intact. Microcement gives one continuous skin, so the classic failure points — cracked grout in the corners, blackened silicone at the tray, a lifted tile behind the mixer — do not exist. Grout-free means mould-free lines

The most common complaint about Irish bathrooms is not the tile — it is the grout. Porous grout joints hold moisture and soap residue, and in a poorly ventilated room they darken within a couple of years. Microcement removes them entirely. There is nowhere for mould to establish along a joint, and cleaning is a wipe-down with a mild pH-neutral cleaner rather than a toothbrush along a grid. Normal extraction and ventilation still matter, as they do in any bathroom, but the maintenance burden drops sharply.

Slip resistance: where Micronoslip comes in

A smooth matt microcement wall or floor is comparable underfoot to a large-format tile — fine in a general bathroom, but a shower floor is wet by design. For shower trays, wet-room floors, steps and thresholds KCBerry specifies Micronoslip, a textured R11 anti-slip microcement formulated for surfaces that are used wet. It carries the same colours as the rest of the system, so the shower floor can match the walls exactly while behaving very differently underfoot.

A typical wet-room build-up is therefore: tanked substrate, Microbase as the fibre-reinforced base coat, Microfinishing on the walls, Micronoslip on the floor and tray, then the appropriate sealer throughout.

Straight over existing shower tiles

Yes — and it is the most common scenario we see in Irish renovations. Over sound, well-fixed tiles, a specialist primer and a fibre-reinforced base coat let microcement bond directly, with no rip-out, no skip hire and no dust. Most bathrooms are finished in days rather than weeks.

Three things get checked before that route is approved: the tiles must be firmly bonded with no drummy or hollow-sounding areas; there must be no active damp or leak behind them; and the existing waterproofing has to be confirmed, or new tanking installed. Where any of those fail, the affected section is stripped and made good first — it is far cheaper to correct at prep stage than after the finish is on.

The seamless spa look

Design is what sells most microcement bathrooms. Running one shade across the floor, the walls, the shower enclosure and the vanity turns a small Irish bathroom into a single calm volume, because the eye is not broken up by joint lines and tile edges. Niches, benches and curved returns can be formed and coated in the same finish. Frequently asked questions

Is microcement waterproof in a shower?
Sealed microcement is water-resistant and grout-free at the surface, but a shower or wet room should always be built on a properly tanked, waterproofed substrate. The tanking handles the waterproofing behind the finish; the microcement and its 2K sealer give a seamless, water-resistant face.
Will microcement grow mould like grout?
There are no grout lines and no silicone-filled tile joints for mould to colonise, which is the single biggest hygiene advantage over tiling. Normal ventilation and a wipe-down are all that a sealed microcement shower needs.
Can microcement go over existing shower tiles?
