Microcement Worktops vs Quartz & Granite: Which Is Right for Your Kitchen?

An honest comparison of seams, installation, heat, scratches, repair and cost — and where quartz and granite still win.

Seams and joints

This is the clearest difference. A microcement worktop is monolithic: it wraps the front edge, turns up the splashback and continues across an island without a single joint, because it is a coating applied in place rather than a slab cut to size. Sink surrounds, internal corners and returns are all one continuous surface.

Quartz and granite arrive as slabs of finite size. On a long run, an L-shape or a large island, the fabricator has to join two pieces, and that seam — however skilfully filled and polished — is visible in raking light and is the point where the surface can eventually discolour. A separate upstand or splashback adds a further line. If a completely unbroken surface is the look you are after, microcement is the only one of the three that delivers it by nature rather than by careful concealment.

Installation and disruption

Microcement is applied over what you already have. A sound, rigid worktop — laminate, timber, tile, quartz or granite — is primed, base-coated with a fibre-reinforced layer, finished and sealed. Nothing is removed, the sink and taps are usually retained, and the kitchen is out of action for days rather than weeks.

Quartz and granite need the opposite process: a template visit once the units are in, fabrication off-site, removal and disposal of the old worktop, then a heavy slab install requiring two or more fitters and clear access. In a renovation where the units and layout are staying, that removal-and-replace cycle is the bulk of the cost and the disruption. Weight and structure

A 2–3 mm microcement finish adds negligible weight, which matters on older units, on cantilevered breakfast bars and on islands that were never engineered for stone. Quartz and granite slabs are typically 20–30 mm thick and heavy enough that base units sometimes need reinforcing and overhangs need brackets. On upper-floor kitchens and in apartment refits, that difference is not academic.

Heat

Granite is the most heat-tolerant of the three — it is natural stone, and a hot pan will not damage it. Quartz is engineered stone bound with resin, and that resin is the weak point: a pan straight off the hob can scorch, yellow or crack it, which is why every quartz manufacturer specifies trivets. Sealed microcement is heat-resistant in normal kitchen use, but the two-part sealer is its limiting layer, so the same rule applies. In practice, all three worktops want a trivet for pans coming straight off the hob or out of the oven; only granite genuinely forgives you if you forget.

Scratches, stains and sealing

Quartz is the most scratch- and stain-resistant surface out of the box and needs no sealing at all — it is the true fit-and-forget option. Granite is very hard but naturally porous, so it needs periodic sealing to keep oil, wine and citrus from marking it. Microcement is durable and, once sealed, water- and stain-resistant, but it is not scratch-proof: use a chopping board rather than cutting on the surface, wipe spills of wine, turmeric, beetroot and citrus promptly, avoid bleach and abrasive pads, and reseal periodically to keep the protection at full strength.

None of these is a maintenance burden. But if the household reality is a busy family kitchen where nobody will ever reach for a board or a trivet, quartz is the honest recommendation.

Repair over the long term

Here microcement has a genuine advantage that is rarely discussed. Because it is a coating rather than a slab, a damaged area can be re-worked, re-coated and resealed to blend into the surrounding surface — and after several years the entire worktop can be refreshed in a new colour without touching the units. A chip in a quartz or granite edge, by contrast, is very difficult to repair invisibly: fillers rarely match the pattern, and replacement means a new slab.
